It’s the same fault that caused the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. In Sanxingdui’s time, a major quake would have liquefied the waterlogged alluvial soil—turning the ground to jelly—and toppled the massive earthen walls. This geological instability may explain why the city was rebuilt multiple times, with new walls stacked on top of collapsed ones.

Modern geophysical surveys have revealed that the site is not a single city but a palimpsest of at least four distinct phases of occupation, each built on the ruins of the last.
The earliest layer (around 2800 BCE) shows small, scattered hamlets with no fortifications. To counter this, the site management has installed a network of re-injection wells—pumping water back into the ground to maintain the water table at a safe level. It’s a bizarre, high-tech solution to a geographic problem: you can’t dig the site up, and you can’t let it dry out, so you have to artificially recreate the ancient swamp conditions. The entire Sanxingdui Museum complex is now built on a raised platform, with the ground floor acting as a giant water reservoir. The museum doesn’t just display the artifacts; it hydrates them.

Let’s get into the weeds of the site’s internal layout. The Sanxingdui city is roughly rectangular, about 3.5 square kilometers, with the main gates on the south and west sides. The south gate is the most elaborate, with a barbican—an outer defensive wall that protects the entrance.
