What the Dates Tell Us About the Craft Itself
The Bronze-Casting Technique: Shang Roots, Shu Twists
Here’s where it gets fascinating. The Sanxingdui foundry workers used the same piece-mold technique as the Shang foundries at Anyang. Radiocarbon dating isn’t as simple as “carbon decays, so older = less carbon.” The amount of carbon-14 in the atmosphere fluctuates over time, so raw dates must be calibrated against tree-ring sequences (dendrochronology). The Sanxingdui samples were calibrated using the IntCal20 curve, which is the current international standard. Or did they just import finished objects? The dates don’t answer this, but they sharpen the question. If the Shang-style bronzes were made in Anyang and traded to Sanxingdui, then the Shu people were consumers of Shang literacy. If they were made locally by Shang-trained craftsmen, then literacy may have been present but unused for local purposes. The clay cores from the Shang-style vessels are the key—if they contain local clay, then the vessels were cast locally. That analysis is ongoing.
The Relationship with Jinsha
The Jinsha site, located about 50 kilometers from Sanxingdui, is a later Shu culture site, dating to around 1000–600 BCE. It has similar gold masks and bronze figures, but with a different style—more naturalistic, less exaggerated. The radiocarbon dates from Sanxingdui (ending around 1000 BCE) and Jinsha (starting around 1000 BCE) suggest a direct cultural succession. The Sanxingdui state collapsed, and the Jinsha state rose to take its place, inheriting some of its craft traditions. The exact relationship—conquest, migration, or internal shift—remains unknown. But the dates now provide a clear chronological bridge.
A Final Thought (Without a Conclusion)
The Sanxingdui bronzes are not just beautiful objects. They are the product of a civilization that we now know, with radiocarbon precision, was thriving at the exact same moment as the Shang dynasty—and doing so with a completely different set of tools, techniques, and gods.
