Sanxingdui was the node where these routes converged—a Bronze Age Singapore, if you will, but with more ritual sacrifice and less air-conditioning.

- Who were the Sanxingdui people? No human remains have been found in the pits. Were they the ancestors of the Yi people, the Qiang, or a lost branch of the Miao? DNA from the few scattered teeth at the site is pending.

The real story is one of braided streams: multiple cradles that constantly fed each other via obscure mountain passes, river fords, and monsoon winds. Sanxingdui is the most dramatic evidence of this braiding. It’s not an “anomaly” or a “mystery.” It’s a reality check.
So, the next time you hear the phrase “Silk Road,” don’t think of camels and caravanserais in the Han dynasty. Think of a bronze mask with bulging eyes, standing in a pit in Sichuan, surrounded by cowries from the Maldives, jade from Xinjiang, and silk that would one day wrap the mummies of Egypt. That’s the precursor. That’s Sanxingdui. And it’s only 2% excavated.
